The release of 1940 Census data led to the preparation of this volume. Six chapters, which cover stories from a few years before the census and during WWII, offer interesting glimpses into the lives of many Ukiah families and businesses. The grape-growing Parducci, Barra, and Testa families are represented, as are the Carpenter household and Elsie Allen’s family, among many others. The 1941 Lion’s Easter egg hunt, parades and demonstrations, the Ukiah Post Office, and the Mendocino State Hospital are profiled. The internment of Mendocino County residents in 1942 is also described. The appendix includes the original questions asked on the census.
